STEPS to Successful Career
Planning
|
 | The STEPS model - Decision-making
Making career decisions
Making career decisions incorporates analyzing
information about you (Self-discovery) and occupational
options (Investigation) for the purpose of
establishing career goals and following a career path which you design.
Career planning
decisions are important and
should be made ONLY after you have made an effort to become more informed about possible
options. How you weigh the options will depend on your own personal style. You
might want to:
 | Compare possible career options to your own
skills, interests, values, abilities and personality
|
 | Make a list of advantages and disadvantages
associated with possible career choices
|
 | Weigh the "costs" or
personal/financial investment necessary to successfully meet the career option
|
 | Visualize yourself in that occupation.
If you can't "see" yourself working as an engineer or teacher, don't include
engineering or teaching in your list of career options.
|
Please take special care NOT to limit your
career options by utilizing incomplete or incorrect information on which to base your
decision!
Ok, now what???
Now that you are ready to start meeting your
career goals, let's talk about the specific components of goal setting. Good goal
setting includes planning various levels of "baby steps" (objectives) and
detailing your short-term and long-term goals. Let's take a look at explanations of
each of these components to help you define what these mean for you and the achievement of
your career goals.
