Employment letters

The Cover Letter

The cover letter includes application, prospecting and networking
letters. Letters of application are used for positions that have been publicly advertised. A prospecting letter is used when contacting an organization that is not currently advertising. A networking letter introduces you to a person who can assist you in your career field, either by providing information on the career field or on specific opportunities.

Opening Paragraph:  The first paragraph should identify your purpose for writing. State how you heard about the position, company or who referred you to this person.

Middle Paragraph(s):   State your reasons for wanting to work for this employer. Outline your unique qualifications, skills and experiences in relation to their needs.

Closing Paragraph:  The final paragraph should thank them for their time, request a meeting time and communicate with them how you intend to follow up. If you state that you will call them on a specific date, make sure that you do so.
