STEPS to Successful Career Planning

Strategies for gathering career information

Transferring or attending graduate school

Tips on how to apply to graduate school:

Application Steps

Step 1

Start early and research schools that offer a program of study that interests you. Resources such as the Peterson’s Graduate Programs guide found in campus, public and Career Services libraries, will help you gather information on:

costs/financial aid
reputation of each school, faculty and programs
student/faculty ratio or class size
diversity of faculty and student body
placement services, if applicable
housing and general location information
residency requirements

Step 2

Research admission procedures for each school targeted by obtaining a graduate catalog.  Typical admission requirements include:

tests (GRE, LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, MAT)
GPA (usually 3.0 or above)
letters of recommendation (usually three)
official transcripts from each college attended
personal statement/application essay (depending on college department)
interview

Step 3

Research the following information concerning the possible tests required for admission:

dates tests are scheduled
test locations
test fees
computerized vs. pencil/paper format

Step 4

Prepare for and take the required tests early enough so that the test results will be received by each targeted school before the application deadlines.

Step 5

Fill out application forms and write an application essay/personal statement.  Make an appointment with an advisor for assistance if needed.
