STEPS to Successful Career
Planning
|
 | The STEPS model - Self-Discovery
 | Assessment Tools
 | When considering what you may want in a
career, you will want to examine not only at your interests, but also your personality,
your values and your skills. These are all part of your Self Assessment. Take
the time to write or print out your results so have them handy as you continue through the
next three steps (Investigation, Decision Making and Implementation) of career planning
and development.
|
 | The University of Missouri has put together a
game that will assist you in evaluating your interests. Though this game has not
been evaluated for validity or reliability, it may provide you with a starting point in
your discovery stage. As you play the Career Interests Game make sure you write down your two
or three letter Holland code. You may also complete a standardized interest
assessment called the Strong Interest Inventory by contacting Counseling and Consultation for information and fees.
|
 | A Personality Assessment will help you learn
more about yourself, how you behave and how you react to certain situations. Again,
you may complete a personality assessment called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) by
contacting Counseling and Consultation.
|
 | Print out the Values Assessment and after examining
your values, write in the five that are most important to you.
|
 | The following Skills Assessment is a list of over 200
skills. Follow the instructions at the top of the page to inventory many of the
skills you possess.
|
 | One way to complete an interest, values and
skills assessment, and get career information all at the same time, is to come into our
office for a computerized assessment called Sigi+.
