Research Report:  Post-Graduation Career Experiences of the Class of 1992: A 5-YR. Out Study

The Career Services Office conducted a pilot-study of the undergraduate class of 1992, five years after graduation, to determine their post-graduation career experiences. The purpose of this study was to explore ASU graduates' experiences as related to their career/major interests, factors affecting career choice, level of career satisfaction, and the university experiences that contributed to their post-graduation plans.
In order to provide wider dissemination of the report to the university community, the Career Services Office presents this condensed review of significant findings from the 1997 study.

The total number of graduates surveyed was 5,000 from both ASU Main and West Campuses.
 

""
 

Twelve percent (N=605) of the class of 1992 responded to the survey.
 

""
 
 

Eighty-seven percent of the graduates indicated they were employed full-time. Sixty-seven percent stated the position was closely related to their major.

Fifty percent used a professional contact or relative or friend to locate their current position.
 

""
 

Seventy-five percent indicated they were very satisfied with their career.
 

""
 
 

Professional on-the-job experience and undergraduate coursework had the highest degree of influence on choice of careers.

Sixty-seven percent had not changed career fields.
 

""
 
 

Since Graduation, sixty-three percent worked for 1 to 2 organizations and thirty-five percent worked for 3 or more organizations.

Different career interests and higher income were the two factors that had the most influence on choice to change careers.
 

""
 
 

Ninety percent indicated they were satisfied to very satisfied with their undergraduate education.

Thirty-seven percent had completed a graduate degree. Thirty-three percent were currently enrolled in a graduate degree program.
