Have you wondered why everyone is talking about LinkedIn? Why is it so important to have a profile? How is having a profile going to help you? These are some common questions that often are not discussed. Continue reading to learn five reasons why having a LinkedIn profile can be beneficial to you.
- Digital Professional Presence
We live in an increasingly digital world. It is highly likely that an employer is going to conduct a quick Google search on potential candidates for hire or applicants into their graduate programs. Imagine if the first results to show up are your personal social media pages. This may not be the first impression that you want to make on an employer! By establishing a strong LinkedIn profile, your professional presence will likely be one of the first results an employer will find. Your first impression can be much stronger when a Google search leads them directly to your professional experiences.
- No Limits on Experiences
If you have a Bachelor’s degree, it is recommended that your resume does not exceed one full page. However, on LinkedIn there are no limits! You can include any and all relevant experiences, skills and involvement. It doesn't hurt to upload your resume to your LinkedIn profile as well.
- Grow Your Network
Living in such a digital world has many benefits – networking being one of them. While networking with staff, faculty and supervisors are wonderful options for expanding your network, consider engaging with professionals all over the world through LinkedIn. Connect with individuals who have careers you aspire to be in, who work with organizations you are interested in, or who have experiences you’d like to learn more about. Think of LinkedIn as your platform to connect with others and learn from them as well.
- Get Ready for the Job Search
LinkedIn is great for connecting with people, and opportunities! You may not be seeking full-time positions yet, but LinkedIn is a great job searching resource when you are. You have the ability to “let recruiters know you’re open” and search for jobs. If your profile is already developed, it makes the application process through LinkedIn that much easier! Employers connect with people, not with profiles, which is why having a full profile makes you a stronger candidate.
- Connect with Your Institution
Connect with Arizona State University on LinkedIn if you haven’t already. ASU's official LinkedIn has over 535,000 members and more than 340,000 alumni connected! This provides many opportunities to connect with other Sun Devils around the world and to learn from their experiences. It’s a great avenue for Sun Devils to support one another.
