Did you know that you can receive academic credit for doing an internship? In fact, many majors at ASU require students to complete an internship as part of their major to graduate, and you may have seen this course (the course number typically ends in 484 or 494) on your own major map. Read below to learn more about who to connect with to ensure that you receive academic credit for your internship!
Meet with your Academic Advisor
This is a critical step in obtaining credit for an internship. Academic Advisors will help you understand parameters and requirements to receive credit for your specific major, and they may also connect you with a college-specific Internship Coordinator (see below). Once you have an internship secured, they will also help you enroll into the correct internship course.
Visit your Career Advisor
Career Advisors can assist you with finding, preparing and applying to an internship. You should have your internship opportunity secured before the semester you plan to enroll in the internship course, so it is important to meet with your Career Advisor early! ASU’s Career and Professional Development Services also offers a ‘Be Internship Ready’ course that assists students with seeking out, applying for and securing internships.
Connect with your College Internship Coordinator
Although each internship-for-credit program varies by academic college, some provide an internship coordinator who, among other things, ensures that internship sites meet standards in order for students to receive credit. These standards are outlined in a form called the Student Placement Agreement (SPA), and this document is completed by the organization offering the internship. Many colleges include information about their specific processes, Internship Coordinator contact info, as well as a list of employers who already have an SPA in place on their website.
It’s never too early to begin talking to the people listed above if you are interested in doing an internship at any point during your time at ASU! They are all available to assist you through the steps needed to find, secure and succeed in an internship that meets all requirements for academic credit.
