Career Fairs: Preparing

Career Fairs are a great way to explore internships and job opportunities, as well as network with potential employers!  Use the information below to prepare for career fairs and explore upcoming fairs.

How to get prepared

  • What is a career fair? Career fairs are an opportunity for students to connect with hiring employers. At Virtual Career Fairs, students interface from employers all over the country though platforms such as Handshake.
  • What to prepare Handshake Complete your profile, register for a career fair, and research employers. Resume Upload your resume to Handshake and be ready to share it with recruiters. Elevator Pitch Perfect your answer to “Tell me about yourself.”
  • Complete your Handshake Profile Include: Profile Picture Summary Statement Work Experience Relevant Coursework
  • Research Companies Find employers that interest you and learn about: Company products/services Job listings on Handshake Job locations and groups Company mission, culture, and values. Check out student reviews on Handshake!
  • Perfect your resume Build your resume using examples and resources on career.asu.edu. Get feedback through Resume Dropbox Meet with an advisor for a 1:1 Resume Review appointment on Handshake. Resume Checklist Includes contact info Easy to read Free of typos Professional format Focused on job-relevant skills and qualifications
  • Tell me about yourself.
Be ready with a powerful introduction. 
"Hello, my name is (blank). I have experience in (blank). My strengths are (blank) and I am looking for (blank).
  • Sign up for sessions: Image of the ASU Spring 2023 Internship registration page and image of one-on-one sign ups.
  • Group Sessions 30 Minutes One presenter, many students. For information Learn about a company and industry or evaluate fit. 1:1 Sessions 10 Minutes Just you and a recruiter. For job seekers “Pitch” yourself and connect with a company recruiter.
  • Tips for 1:1s & Etiquette Attend the Group Session. Dress professionally. Simple background and good lighting.
  • Why Follow Up? Continue the conversation. Clarify questions. Most students won’t. In image: Send a message Note sure what to say? Follow up on something you found interesting or helpful from the event. Show your enthusiasm for a role, this company, or the industry. Ask questions about the company.
