Looking for tips on how to make the most of your appointment with a Career and Industry Specialist? Below are some helpful suggestions that will enable you to do just that!
Research Resources and Ask Questions
There is some preparation that should take place before the appointment if you want to get the most out of it. First, make sure to review the resources that can help you prepare for the appointment by visiting career.asu.edu. Be sure to write down a list of questions you would like to ask to ensure you don't miss anything.
If you are seeking a job or internship at the time of your appointment, be sure to bring some example job or internship listings that you find interesting. This is especially helpful if you are seeking resume and cover letter assistance during the appointment. Also, be sure to upload your resume or other documents onto Handshake prior to meeting with the Specialist.
Although your Career & Industry Specialist will be sending you a follow up email with information discussed in your appointment, your own personal notes will be incredibly valuable. During your meeting with the Specialist, you will have your own thoughts and insights come to you. If not written down, those thoughts can quickly be forgotten once you leave the room.
If you need a minute during the meeting to write some things down, please speak up! I can assure you that we will be happy to provide you that time for note taking. Also, if your Specialist said something that you would like repeated, feel free to let them know. We want to make sure that you have all the information you need.
Homework- Just do it!
As I mentioned before, your Specialist will send you a follow-up email after your appointment. In that email, they will spell out some action items, also known as homework. There is a good reason for this. Ultimately, your career is in your own hands. Only you can develop yourself professionally.
Your Specialist will continue to offer guidance, advice and resources. But in order to become career ready, you must consistently seek to develop the career competencies by following those action steps that your Specialist has selected specifically for you.
Preparation is key when it comes to your professional development. We assure you, following these quick and easy steps, will help you to get the most out of your time with a Career and Industry Specialist.
