If you are graduating this semester, there are a few things you should consider doing to help you experience a smooth transition into your professional career.
A good way to start is by reflecting back on your last few years at Arizona State University and your engagement within the community. Make sure that you update your resume so it accurately reflects everything you have been a part of for the last couple of years (even if you think some of those experiences are not as relevant to your future career field). It is always better to write down the information when is fresh in your mind rather than trying to recall it years down the line.
Another document that you will need as you get ready to start your professional career is a cover letter. It is important to remember that as an ASU student, you have access to free resources that can assist you with creating the perfect cover letter. You should also be aware that as an alumnus, you have access to Career and Professional Development Services and its resources for life. However; that is currently not the case with the ASU Writing Center. Stop by to see the Writing Center as a student and have them review your application materials to ensure you are effectively communicating your qualifications on all of your application documents.
Once you feel confident with your resume and cover letter, it is time for you to start submitting job applications. You can attend the next job and internship fair on-campus and search for opportunities on Handshake prior to graduation. This will give you a better idea of what employers are looking for in a candidate and will also expose you to new networking opportunities.
Lastly, schedule one more meeting with a Career and Industry Specialist, as they are a great resource in preparation for your next interview. Even if you are confident in your interview skills, repetition will allow you to sharpen those skills and better identify the different types of questions you may encounter.
If you would prefer to practice on your own, you can always take advantage of Interview Stream, an online platform that allows you to record yourself going through a mock interview so you can then analyze it on your own or have an industry specialist comment on your answers.
On behalf of Career and Professional Development Services, congratulations on your upcoming graduation, and remember, we are always here to assist with any career-related concerns or questions you may have!
