When applying to job and internship opportunities, it is important to create documents that reflect your skills and accomplishments, while also tailoring what you create to the specific opportunity you are applying to.
Avoid the temptation to make a generic resume and use it for every application. Instead, use the following tips to make the best impression and enhance your chances of landing an interview!
Identify what's most important to the company.
Focus on the roles, responsibilities, and skills identified in the job description. Make sure you at least meet the minimum requirements for the opening by paying close attention to the qualities listed in the preferred and desired qualifications section. You should also solicit the internet and professional networking opportunities to learn about the office culture and values.
Match your resume content with the job description.
Starting with your summary or objective, add the name of the position and company you are applying to, and mirror the information collected in the job description when describing your skills. Here is an example: “Enthusiastic sustainability major with research experience, seeking a summer internship with the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, utilizing research and teamwork skills.”
As you add new work experience, create accomplishment statements for each that highlight your skills, what you did for that organization, and make it coincide with the themes and values identified in the job description. For instance,if a company values customer services skills, then try to create statements that demonstrate your experience interacting with customers in a positive way.
Review your work.
After creating your documents, have someone review and check your grammar and content to be sure you are presenting your very best version of yourself on paper. Utilizing Career and Professional Development Services is a great way to do this. Use Resume Dropbox to upload your resume and cover letter, and get feedback emailed to you in 3 business days.
