When it comes to salary negotiation, the key to success is being open to discussion and knowing what you will and will not accept.
- Know your Worth
You need to be able to showcase your value to the organization, so come to the conversation with a clear understanding of what you are asking for and why you deserve it.
- Research Market Value
It is important that you backup your negotiation with research. This research can be around the salaries or benefits of similar openings; the skills and experience necessary for the position, and even the compensation or benefits of the position in the past.
Know the key selling point for your negotiation. What if the organization does not accept your request or counter offers? Create a strategy beforehand to prepare yourself for these situations, with a clear understanding of just how far you are willing to negotiate.
- Practice Makes Perfect
Finally, prepare how you will make the ask, and determine your overall goal in the negotiation. Consider the parts of the salary and benefits package you are not willing to compromise on, as well as the types counter offers that may be presented to you and which you may be willing to accept.
