Home Base Initiative aims to fill critical gaps in mental health advocacy & support. Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the U.S. for youth ages 10-19. While the statistics surrounding the current mental health epidemic are both staggering and heartbreaking, there are many programs and a lot of information out there that can help! Much of the information about these programs can only be found inside difficult to read research journals, creating a barrier between innovation and application. One goal of our initiative is to SMASH that barrier through our digital resource guide full of suicide prevention programs and mental wellness tips that work. Additionally, social factors such as feelings of isolation and the lack of tightly-networked school communities are closely linked to suicidality in adolescent boys and girls. The second goal of our initiative is to fight these risk factors by bringing together groups of students to build strong social support networks and establish healthy high school communities. Through personal development and positive peer-to-peer interactions, students foster open communication and build a foundation of support for their next steps after high school.
