“Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.”
― Parker Palmer, The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life
There are many k-12 teachers who grew up knowing that teaching is their purpose in life or “playing school” after-school and finding opportunities to help others learn throughout their education. However, many of those who have found their place in front of the classroom did so after transitioning from another job or career pathway. Teaching is an incredibly meaningful and noble career opportunity and may suit many with an interest in education, a passion for service, or strengths in oral & written communication, and more.
Are you considering teaching? Jennifer Magliano's "Teaching-How to Know, Show, and Tell That You Have What it Takes” is a great read to help you assess your transferable skills, strategize ways in which to gain relevant education-related experience, and best tell your story effectively in the application and interview process.
