Marsh Digital is a digital, data and analytics organization that provides insurance broking and risk management services. In November 2019, we met with their organization leaders to learn about their typical openings and the culture within their organization. During our visit, we learned what Marsh Digital looks for in a candidate, how they are diversifying the workplace and the company culture they create.
What Marsh Digital looks for in a candidate:
The primary opportunities highlighted were full-time roles and internships. A few of the most desirable industry areas include marketing and graphic design, software development, information technology and actuarial science. Of these industry areas, the most important technical skills they are looking for include full-stack developing and knowledge of Python (the computer language). Marsh Digital leaders also discussed the importance of transferable skills in the organization that included teamwork, leadership and self-initiative based on the type of projects that employees worked on.
Diversifying the workplace:
During our conversation, the importance of women in STEM and how Marsh Digital is actively trying to expand and diversify the workforce was a hot topic. One of the many initiatives Marsh Digital leadership promoted was the All-Women Hackathon, an event committed to providing women of different backgrounds and experiences an opportunity to network and create next-generation insurtech solutions.
Creating a collaborative team environment:
On the tour, there were many Scrum rooms where teams work together on projects such as developing software applications and creating risk models. These rooms had handwriting all over the walls which were in fact whiteboards that encouraged critical thinking and displayed future processes. As the tour progressed, we walked past multiple open spaces with adjustable height desks, either an employee's personal workspace, or labeled as “this desk is open today” meaning it was available for others to use if they wish.
The time there was valuable in learning about a growing organization and getting the inside scoop on what it is like working at Marsh Digital. If you are interested in learning more, you can find open positions through Handshake, or the Marsh & McLennan companies website which displays open positions all over the world.
